Safety Director of Construction 10-14-19

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

- Keeps General Superintendent informed of Safety Program progress, changes, successes, and incidents.
- Inspects project sites.
- Maintains a program to have safe behavior for all employees that reinforces the commitment of zero injuries by The Samuels Group senior management.
- Assists Human Resources in managing the existing drug and alcohol testing procedures in all geographic areas.
- Develops and maintain task-based training for all workers on The Samuels Group jobsites.
- Sets the standards of excellence for The Samuels Group employees in matters of safety training and OSHA certification courses. Maintain records of all employee training mandated by The Samuels Group and state or federal agencies.
- Works with the General Superintendent to set the commitments of The Samuels Group's safety program to be part of the business plan and see that the commitments are followed. Also, report to the General Superintendent on the status and progress toward meeting those safety commitments.
- Reviews and keeps current the SDS reference books for compliance so that it is a viable and effective communication tool for operations within The Samuels Group.
- Develops and maintains an orientation program, including an introductory video for all new employees.
- Anticipates project safety needs and assist with required safety training. Monitor site safety communication to maintain training effectiveness (signage, toolbox meetings, etc.).
- Performs internal safety audits and inspections on all projects on a random basis. Instructs and train field workers in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions to eliminate hazards.
- Works with state and federal agencies on inspections and issues identified, if any, to minimize the future impact on The Samuels Group.
- Assures that adequate, properly trained personnel are available to carry out the required functions safely on all projects and prospective projects.
- In conjunction with Human Resources monitors the return-to-work process for injured employees to minimize the impact of an injured worker returning to a jobsite. Creatively identify the work an injured worker can perform.
- Coordinates company safety policy and procedures.
- Develops company materials, maintains logs of company statistics, and organize safety related conferences and meetings.
- Ensures company compliance with federal, state, and local ordinances, regulation and reporting requirements. Communicates and negotiates with State and Federal Agencies.
- Trains workers in learning how to recognize hazards and what to do about them.
- Oversees response to unsafe conditions.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- Must participate in the AGC Wisconsin Safety.
- Other duties as may be necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.
Work Relationships and Scope:
Reports directly to the Company President. All field staff and Project Managers report to the Safety Director in regards to safety issues or procedures. Working relationships required with Site Superintendents, Site Foremen, Site Trade Workers, Management Team, Project Managers, Customers, Subcontractors, General Public, Union Business Agents, and Clients. Involves no supervisory functions, but requires the ability to work and coordinate with others.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The attributes listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability appropriate for the level of work performed.
- Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management or Industrial Safety and 5 plus years of safety management experience. Safety or OSHA Teaching Certification desired.
- A proactive rather than reactive approach to the concept of zero injuries in the construction process.
- Be able to read, comprehend and recognize safety standards and recognize safety standards and issues.
- Ability to travel.
- Highly developed organizational and planning skills, time management and written/oral communication skills.
- Goal-driven leader who maintains a productive climate and confidently motivates, mobilizes, and coaches employees to meet high performance standards.

In a typical 8 hour work day, employee will usually; sit at least four hours, stand at least two hours and walk at least two hours. Employee's job requires occasionally to; bend/stoop, squat/crawl, climb 30-60 ft., reach above shoulder, crouch/kneel, balance, push/pull, lift/carry up to 30 pounds, exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity, exposure to dust, fumes, gases and noise sometimes over 85 DBA and working on open high locations. Employee's job frequently requires; using hands for repetitive action such as simple grasping and manipulating and being around moving machinery. Work hours are generally during normal business hours. However, unscheduled evening and weekend work may be necessary to meet the needs of the organization. Out-of-town and overnight business travel may be required.
