If you were able to catch the episode of Eco-Tech about Green Building on the Science Channel last night you saw several options in building that make structures use less resources, make them more efficient and better for the environment.
One such feature detailed on the show last night was green rooftops. The Chicago City Hall was featured and as well as saving the city over $5000 a year on utility bills, the rooftop garden has become a local attraction with people relocating their offices in adjacent buildings to have a view of the rooftop.
According to Eco-Tech, if green rooftops were adopted on all the available roof areas in Chicago, the city would see a 12 degree drop in temperature during the sweltering summer months. Adding to the environmental benefits of green rooftops, Eco-Tech stated that unlike the typical 10 year lifetime of a typical black rooftop, a green rooftop may not need to be replaced for as long as 50 years due to the protection the roof membrane receives from its organic layer.
